Lumen as successor to Watt

You are standing in front of a shelf full of beautiful luminaires, but you feel confused by terms like lumens and watts. We are happy to help you and give you an overview of lumens, watts and LEDs in a few words.

Luminous flux and intensity in lumens?

Even before the production of incandescent bulbs was stopped, the successor LED came onto the market. The LED stands for Light Emitting Diode and basically consists of small high-intensity LEDs instead of filaments. In contrast to incandescent bulbs, the light is produced in a more environmentally friendly way and no longer measured in watts but in lumens.

Choosing the right lumens

Now to the most important question, how many lumens do I actually need? You can assume that 100 lumens per square metre are enough to satisfy every need. For a cosy feeling or decorative lighting, we recommend a luminous flux of fewer than 100 lumens, if you want to illuminate the room brightly, we recommend a luminous flux of around 300 lumens/square metre.

Lumens instead of watts, how do I calculate correctly?

Deciding on luminous intensity and current is crucial for an ideal purchase, but how can you convert watts to lumens? Unfortunately, there is no conversion factor from lumens to watts, or from watts to lumens, but there are some values that roughly correspond to the conversion. The watts of incandescent lamps can be roughly converted into lumens using the values listed below.

  • 25W bulb = approx. 200 lumen
  • 40W bulb = approx. 450 lumen
  • 60W bulb = approx. 800 lumen
  • 75W bulb = approx. 1000 lumen
  • 100W bulb = approx. 1500 lumen

If you buy a new LED luminaire with 800 lumens, this would be equivalent to 60 watts and is perceived by the eye as the same. The well-known light bulb will be a thing of the past in the distant future. The reasons are conclusive: environmentally harmful substances, heat build-up and unnecessary energy consumption caused the change. For some time now, there have been so-called LED lights, which are environmentally friendly, do not generate heat and consume less energy.

With our dimmable models, you can switch between lighter and darker lighting to suit your mood and the time of day. Depending on the model, control is possible either via the switch or a remote control. This allows you to change the atmosphere in the room at the touch of a button! Many lights that can be controlled by remote control also have a memory function. This means that the last setting you selected is saved and used instead of the default setting the next time you switch on. Pretty smart!
