Outdoor wall lights
Outdoor wall lights are much more than just a practical light source in the garden and on the terrace. They are an essential design element that enhances the aesthetics of your home while ensuring safety and comfort. Wall luminaires set targeted lighting accents that highlight the architecture and let your garden, terrace or entrance area shine in an inviting atmosphere. By combining different types of luminaires, shapes and colours, an individual lighting design can be realised that underlines your personal style and the special features of your house.
Types of Outdoor Wall Lights
LED outdoor wall lights
LED outdoor wall lights are particularly popular because they are energy-efficient and durable. LEDs save up to 90 percent electricity compared to conventional incandescent lamps.
A particular advantage is the bright light of an LED outdoor wall light, which can also be used to cover large outdoor areas. They are therefore an excellent option for illuminating entrance areas or as path lighting.
LED outdoor wall lights are available either with an integrated LED module or with replaceable LED bulbs. Pay attention to the frame, such as E27.
LED outdoor wall lights also offer various advantages over halogen lamps:
- LEDs save 60 percent of electricity compared to halogen lamps.
- They are switch-resistant, so frequent switching on and off is no problem.
- LEDs have a significantly longer lifespan.
- In contrast to energy-saving lamps, LEDs do not contain mercury.
- LEDs are very suitable for motion detectors because they provide 100 percent brightness right out of the box.
- Thanks to filament technology, modern LEDs also look good in open luminaires.
By combining different LED outdoor wall lights, the outdoor area can be optimally illuminated.
Outdoor wall lights stainless steel
Stainless steel outdoor LED wall lights are a popular choice for homeowners looking for a modern and durable lighting solution for their outdoor space. Stainless steel is a tough and weather-resistant material that can withstand the elements and look good for years to come. Modern outdoor lights are often silver, anthracite or black. They are also available in a variety of styles and designs, so you're sure to find a light fixture that matches your home.
Outdoor wall lights with solar
Outdoor wall lights with solar are environmentally friendly and easy to install because they do not require wiring. They are particularly suitable for areas that are not easily accessible or where there are no power sources. Outdoor lights with solar panels rely on the light of the sun to charge their battery. The big advantage is the freedom to choose the installation location, because solar lights can be installed without wiring and without specialist knowledge. In addition, solar technology saves you electricity costs.
Solar wall lights are a great option for cosy ambient lighting in the garden or on the terrace. The solar module should ideally always be exposed to direct sunlight and ideally facing south. If this is not possible, you can choose a solar outdoor wall light where the solar panel is not permanently integrated into the luminaire.
Outdoor wall lights with motion detector
Outdoor wall lights with motion detectors offer increased safety and comfort. They save energy because the light is only activated when motion is detected, and they deter unwanted guests.
Outdoor wall lights with motion sensors also help reduce light pollution. The light is there immediately (and only then) when it is needed. Thanks to the various settings of the motion detector, it is possible to control exactly in which cases the lighting is switched on.
Modern LED lamps are ideal for motion detectors because they immediately offer 100 percent brightness.
Selection criteria for outdoor wall lights
In order for you to be able to choose the right outdoor lighting for your home, you should consider a few criteria.
Purpose of lighting
Is the luminaire primarily intended to provide safety, for example at the entrance to the house or along paths? Then a bright luminaire with motion detector is a good choice. For the illumination of paths, uniform illumination without harsh light-dark contrasts is also important.
To create a cosy atmosphere, for example on the terrace or in the garden, a warm white lamp with low brightness is recommended.
Style of the house
Simple and geometric luminaires made of stainless steel, aluminium or plastic are suitable for a modern house.
For traditional houses, classic lamps with ornaments or made of materials such as wrought iron or copper are more suitable. Lamps with floral patterns or with a wood look look particularly good on country-style houses.
Shape and size
Round luminaires ensure a soft and even distribution of light. In contrast, angular lights look more modern and minimalist. Large luminaires are suitable for illuminating large areas, while small luminaires are more likely to provide accents.
Light
The light colour of the wall lamp influences the effect of the light and the atmosphere created by the lighting.
Warm white light (up to 4,000 Kelvin) has a cosy and inviting effect and is more insect-friendly.
Neutral white light (approx. 4,000 Kelvin) offers good colour rendering and is well suited for illuminating paths and driveways
Cool white light (from 5,000 Kelvin) has a rather cool and technical effect and is often used for emergency lighting.
Colourful accents can be set with RGB LED lights.
Material
The appearance of their outdoor wall luminaires is particularly shaped by the material from which the luminaires are made. There is a large selection of different materials here.
Stainless steel is robust, weather-resistant and easy to clean and provides a modern look.
Aluminium is lightweight, corrosion-resistant and also easy to clean. Outdoor lighting made of aluminium is also suitable for a modern style.
Plastic is inexpensive, durable and available in many colors.
Glass, wood, brass, copper or wrought iron are also often used for outdoor lighting. These materials impress with a natural and high-quality appearance.
Degree of protection (IP class)
The IP protection class indicates how well an outdoor luminaire is protected against the ingress of foreign objects and moisture. Outdoor lights are exposed to various weather conditions such as rain, snow and dust. The IP rating is indicated by two digits, with the first digit indicating protection against solid foreign objects and the second digit indicating protection against moisture. The higher the number, the better the protection. For outdoor wall luminaires, at least protection class IP44 is required.
Brightness and light intensity
Depending on the area of application and position of the outdoor luminaire, the appropriate light intensity must be selected. 400 to 600 lumens are sufficient for decorative light at the entrance to the house or on the terrace.
Up to several thousand lumens are needed for the illumination of large areas or for emergency lighting. Of course, it is a good idea to distribute them over several lights.
Power supply
The power supply determines where outdoor lights can be placed. Luminaires that are operated with mains power require a supply line. This is usually present or at least not far away when installed on a house wall.
If no power connection is available, or if the cabling is too complex, you can alternatively use solar-powered lights or luminaires with battery operation. However, this is associated with restrictions - for example in terms of lighting time. Such luminaires are particularly suitable for short lighting times, for example in conjunction with a motion detector.
Assembly and installation
If you are installing a new light fixture, you may need a power connection. Electrically powered lights require wiring, which should be done by a professional.
To mount the luminaire, you usually need a stable surface and suitable fastening material. The luminaire should be placed in a place that is protected from the elements and at the same time allows optimal illumination of the desired area. High-voltage luminaires with 230 V can be connected without an intermediate transformer, but for safety reasons, the connection should be carried out by a specialist. For luminaires with a low-voltage voltage (12 V or 24 V), a transformer is required that converts the voltage from standard household sockets into the required low-voltage voltage. The wattage ratings of the luminaires are added together and the sum must not exceed the wattage of the transformer.
After installation, you should check the luminaire for its function. Make sure that the light is lit properly and that all functions such as motion detectors or timers are working properly.
